Basin Analysis

The research activities include provenance analyses and the reconstruction of the palaeogeography and achitecture of sedimentary basins. The studies should lead to an understanding of the relationships between tectonics, climate and sedimentation processes, the influence of sedimentary processes on lithological facies, diagenesis and the resulting geomechanical properties of the rocks.

Geothermal/Geoenergy

The Geothermal/Geoenergy Section of the Chair of Geology deals with all geoscientific topics within geoenergies, such as geothermal energy, hydrocarbon reservoirs, underground storage, etc. The Geothermics/Geoenergy Section also hosts the new Master’s degree programme GeoThermics/GeoEnergy and is an essential part of the Geothermal Alliance Bavaria. https://www.geoenergy.nat.fau.de/.

The research spectrum of the near-surface geothermal energy working group covers the large topic area of shallow, earth-coupled geothermal systems, which can be investigated on a university-owned test field under various real conditions. Furthermore, sustainable flood protection, geophysical investigation methods, the determination of petro- and pedophysical parameters, as well as their large- and small-dimensional interpretation and representation using GI systems, among other things, are focal points of the research activity.

Paleo Climate

The isotope geochemistry group is focussing on the reconstruction of changes in the global carbon cycle and associated changes in global temperature and climate history. Carbon, nitrogen and oxygen isotope analyses of carbonates, phosphates and organic material are used to reconstruct global changes in the carbon cycle, the nutrient supply in the oceans and the surface water temperature of the oceans.
