Geoscience for Teaching

Additional study Geosciences in lectureship studies

The additional course Geoscience for Teaching is a supplementary qualification for students of Teaching for Gymnasium or Realschule in the subjects of Geography, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology or Physics. It is also for students of Teaching for Mittelschule or Grundschule. The geoscience content of the Bavarian curriculum focuses on current sociopolitically relevant challenges, e.g. resources, climate change, natural disasters, groundwater protection and GeoEnergy. The main objective of additional subjects is to learn technical, logical and practical methods of teaching. The focus of additional studies is the content of the “Lehrplanalternative Geologie (Alternative Curriculum Geology)” to the advanced level of high schools in Bavaria.

For the acquisition of the certificate Geoscience for Teaching, it is necessary to earn 20 ECTS points. The additional course is designed to be completed in 2 semesters of 10 ECTS respectively.

1st Semester (winter semester):
Students gain fundamental geoscience skills through seminars and exercises. The following two modules of 5 ECTS credits respectively are planned for the first semester:

  • „Das System Erde“ (The Earth System) (4 SWS)
  • „Der Mensch im geowissenschaftlichen Umfeld“ (Humans in Geoscience Environments) + „Archäometrie“ (Archaeometry) (5 SWS)

2nd Semester (summer semester):
Students gain methodical and teaching skills during field trips and seminars.

  • „Exkursion“ (Fieldtrip) + „Aus der Praxis in die Praxis“ (From Practice to Experience) (5 SWS)
  • „Geologisch-didaktisches Seminar“ (Geology for Teaching Seminar) (5 SWS)

There is no separate enrolment needed for the additional course. Please register with Dr. Anette Regelous (anette.regelous@fau.de).

The modules take place in the GeoZentrum Nordbayern.
