Wüst und leer, das ist eine weit verbreitete Vorstellung über den Zustand des Meeresbodens. Das geologische Wissen über die Tiefen des Meeres ist heute noch lückenhaft. Gesteinsproben von Tiefseevulkanen machen es nun möglich, die grundlegenden Prozesse unseres Planeten besser zu verstehen. Dabei halten die Tiefseevulkane und die an ihnen vorkommenden Organismen immer wieder neue wissenschaftliche Überraschungen für uns bereit.
