Global patterns are key to understanding macroevolution

In their recently in communications biology published study Zhen Guo and Wolfgang Kiessling shed light on regional diversity patterns. The essence of the study is as follows.

🔬 Regional vs. Global Diversification: What do the fossils really say?
– 76% of plate-level turnover comes from immigration & local extirpation, not pure speciation/extinction.
– Regional diversity signals are strongly skewed by local sampling, preservation, and geology.
Bottom line: Global analyses are still vital for uncovering true macroevolutionary patterns over deep time.
