Hydro- & Environmental Geology

The working group investigates biogeochemical cycles in ground- and surface waters in small to medium catchments. The current focus is on the investigation of the global carbon cycle and the hydrologic cycle by means of stable isotopes.

Aqueous carbon phases including dissolved inorganic, organic and particulate organic carbon (DIC, DOC and POC) as well as dissolved oxygen, water isotopes, major ions and trace elements are measured in the working group’s

laboratories

These combined analytical approaches allow quantification of important carbon sources and sinks and interactions between the different phases. A recent expansion towards investigation of trace element dynamics is covered by an state-ot-the-art inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) instrument.
