Career prospectives

The career prospects for geoscientists are very good due to the breadth of education in the program and the interdisciplinary nature of the subject. Depending on the individual orientation, a variety of different occupational fields open up through the options and specializations in the master’s program. The master’s degree expands the career opportunities for geoscientists and is often a prerequisite for positions in project management. In addition, the master’s degree forms the basis for further doctoral studies, which is a prerequisite for further employment in research institutions and universities. Jobs for geoscientists can be found, for example, in:

  • Industrial and commercial companies (e.g., raw material exploration, material development, equipment manufacturers)
  • Engineering offices and consulting firms (e.g., subsoil development, tunnel construction, dam construction, geothermal energy, remediation of contaminated sites)
  • Research institutes and universities (e.g. basic research, prediction of natural disasters, equipment support)
  • Educational institutions, museums and geoparks
  • Authorities and ministries (e.g. water supply, environmental protection)

The Career Service at FAU offers a professional range of events and advice and supports students, graduates and doctoral candidates (up to one year after graduation) in planning and implementing their career entry.
