This workshop will deal with the formation of magmatic sulfide ore deposits in mafic and ultramafic magmas. Participants will learn the main magmatic processes yielding ore genesis. As a first step, we will discuss the mechanisms leading to sulfide saturation in magmas, and the formation of an immiscible sulfide melt. To evaluate the efficiency of the different mechanism we will use experimental studies at magmatic conditions, thermodynamic simulations and natural examples. In a second step, we will examine both mantle and crustal processes affecting the metal enrichment of the sulfide melt. We will finally deal with the crystallization of the sulfide melt and observe sulfide phases occurring in the thin sections of disseminated and massive sulfide ores from Noril’sk-Talnakh intrusions (Polar Siberia).
