SUMMARY:Freshers’ Ralley
UID:9a8c-bf0f-b229-26986@www.gzn.nat.fau.eu
DESCRIPTION:It’s almost time for the Freshman Rally. Whether you’r
 e a new master’s or bachelor’s student\, every newcomer to the Geo
Zentrum is invited to participate. The event starts at 4:00 p.m. in fr
ont of the Geological Institute in the Schlossgarten. During the Fresh
 man Rally\, you’ll get to know Erlangen’s downtown area a little b
etter. You’ll be divided into random groups and will then have to pl
ay games or solve puzzles at various stations to earn points. Each gro
up collects points together\, so teamwork is essential. At the end\, e
veryone will meet up at the Eleon\, where a prize awaits the winning g
roup. The official part runs from 4:00 PM to around 8:00 PM (depending
on how quickly each individual group moves). Starting at 8:00 PM\, th
e event continues at the Eleon (bar) open end. Participation is option
al\; everyone can decide for themselves how long they’d like to stay
. Please note that the event will also take place if it rains. In that
case\, be sure to bring an umbrella or similar item.

GeoZentrum Nordbayern\, Schlossgarten 5\, Erlangen Abstract: This ses
sion explores the Māori relationship with nature in Aotearoa\, where
rivers\, mountains\, and forests are not resources to be managed but a
ncestors to be in relationship with. The session also examines what ha
ppens when that worldview meets the demands of resource extraction\, f
reshwater governance\, and conservation policy. Through first-hand per
spective and concrete case examples including the Whanganui River’s
legal personhood and the ongoing freshwater conflicts\, students will
encounter a genuinely different framework for thinking about the human

Supergroup in the southern part of the West African craton constitutes
one of the world’s largest gold provinces with an endowment of more
than 10\,000 metric tons (t). Therefore\, West Africa hosts the large
st Paleoproterozoic gold-producing region worldwide. Ghana\, the major
gold-producer in Africa\, produces between 150 and 170 metric tonnes
per year. The gold mainly occurs in structurally-controlled lode-gold
deposits\, which commonly occur in the transition zones between the vo
lcanic belts and the basin sediments of the Birimian Supergroup. In Gh
ana and eastern Ivory Coast\, the 2.2 to 2.0 Ga Birimian terranes cons
ist of parallel and evenly spaced\, NNE-trending volcanic belts separa
ted by sedimentary basins\, while in Burkina Faso and central Ivory Co
ast continuity\, spacing\, and parallelism of Birimian volcanic belts
are less clearly developed\, and terrains between them are made up lar
gely of gneisses and granitoids. The major gold deposits are lode-gold
deposits that are interpreted as ‘orogenic gold deposits‘\, altho
ugh paleoplacer and placer deposits also occur in the volcanic belts.
The volcanic belts are dominated by tholeiitic volcanic rocks\, with i
soclinally folded volcaniclastic and chemical sediments filling adjace
nt sedimentary subbasins\, which are intruded by extensive\, late kine
matic granitoid plutons. Locally\, the tholeiitic basalts are as

t: Arc environments are locally gold-endowed and it has been long hypo
thesized that gold mobilization during slab dehydration could affect m
antle composition and arc Au-fertility. Here\, we determine gold mobil
ity during prograde high pressure-low temperature metamorphism of both
metavolcanic and metasedimentary rocks from the islands of Santorini\
, Ios\, Naxos and Syros (Greece). These rocks experienced peak greensc
hist to upper-blueschist/eclogite facies metamorphism\, allowing deter
mination of large-scale gold mobility within a subduction zone. Our da
ta shows that gold is significantly mobilized by fluids at the bluesch
ist-eclogite facies transition. In the associated mélange zones at th
e slab-mantle interface gold shows heterogeneous concentration but is
not enriched\, implying only partial retention of gold in the mélange
and its mobilization across the slab-mantle interface. Furthermore\,
the intrinsically complex lithologies and heterogenous gold concentrat
ions of these mélange zones contribute to the slab component inherent
to arc magmatism\, and can affect magmatism gold-fertility. Bio: Dr.

\, 91054 Erlangen Abstract Flooding is one of the most devastating nat
ural hazards\, causing significant loss of life and resources across t
he globe. Flood Frequency Analysis (FFA) is commonly used to estimate
flood quantiles at different return periods\, thereby providing essent
ial information to flood managers and decision makers for flood risk a
ssessment. However\, the traditional FFA assumes all the flood samples
are process-neutral\, neglecting the inherent flood-generating mechan
isms. Further\, with the anthropogenic climate change impact\, the flo
od distributions are expected to change\, thereby affecting the flood
quantile estimates. My PhD research addresses these challenges by deve
loping improved approaches for flood quantile estimation. First\, I pr
opose a novel methodology that integrates pooling of reforecast datase
ts and addresses sample heterogeneity to show the importance of incorp
 orating diverse flood-generating processes in FFA. Next\, a season-mix
ing climate-informed approach has been proposed\, which exploits clima
te- flood linkages and incorporates the seasonality effect while estim
ating flood quantiles. Furthermore\, the climate-informed model is ext
ended to forecast season-ahead flood quantiles for the Indian catchmen
ts and compares the results against the stationary reference model. Th
e results demonstrate the improved capability of the climate-informed
model in forecasting flood quantiles with uncertainty comparable to th
at of the reference model. The talk will also highlight o

  Übungsraum Geologie (01.124) &#8211\; GeoZentrum Nordbayern\, Schlos

 ’s largest deposits of tin\, tantalum\, tungsten (the “3Ts”)\, a
nd lithium-minerals essential to modern technologies and the energy tr
ansition. These resources are extracted through profoundly different m
odes of operation\, ranging from artisanal small-scale (ASM) mining to
capital-intensive industrial exploration. In this presentation I will
discuss the geology and exploitation of pegmatite-hosted rare metal d
eposits in Central Africa. I will focus on recent developments at the
Manono-Kitotolo lithium-tantalum-tin deposits in the DRC\, to illustra
te major challenges of resource governance in Central Africa and the c
ontrasting perspectives involved. The 3T and lithium deposits in Centr
al Africa occur in widespread granitic pegmatites and quartz veins. Ov
er time\, deep tropical weathering has turned some of these deposits i
nto soft soils rich in tin and tantalum\, accessible to artisanal mine
rs. These miners extract cassiterite and columbite-tantalite through h
ard manual labor for minimal income. In contrast\, lithium must be ext
racted from hard\, unweathered rock\, requiring industrial-scale opera
tions and significant capital investment. Recent developments at the w
orld-class Manono-Kitotolo Li-Sn-Ta project highlight the uneven playi
ng field between Western private companies\, which are closely monitor
ed by shareholders and must follow strict international reporting and
ESG rules\, and Chinese state-owned enterprises\, which operate

SUMMARY:Geokolloqium\, Dr. Sofia-Katerina Kufner
UID:e003-bfdb-49ce-24238@www.gzn.nat.fau.de
DESCRIPTION:&#8211\; GEOSCIENTIFIC COLLOQUIUM &#8211\; A seismological
view on Myanmar: from tearing lithospheric slabs and destructive crus
tal earthquakes Presentation from Dr. Sofia-Katerina Kufner Friedrich-
Alexander-Universität (FAU) &nbsp\; Abstract Myanmar is located south
of the Eastern Himalayan Syntaxis and largely situated on the Burmese
microplate\, where two main players drive tectonic activity. First\,
along the Burmese plate’s western margin\, the indentation of the In
dian Plate into Asia led to the oblique subduction of India\, featurin
g intense intermediate depth seismicity. Second\, along the plate’s
eastern margin\, dextral motion along the Sagaing Fault separates the
Burmese microplate from the Asian Plate\, leading to repeated large an
d destructive crustal earthquakes\, like the most recent in March 2025
. The associated lithospheric structure is complex and three-dimension
al and includes a transition from an oceanic-transitional subduction s
lab to continental subduction and collision\, likely involving plate t
earing and bending. Furthermore\, Myanmar exhibits late Pleistocene to
Quaternary volcanism that likely occurred in multiple distinct phases
. Geochemical studies reveal pronounced compositional differences amon
g volcanic sites\, which has led to different interpretations regardin
g timing and location of potential slab tears. In this talk\, I presen
t seismological results from data recorded by around 140 regional seis
mic stations\, primarily from temporary deployments\, that had been op
erated within Myanmar and surroundings between 2019 and 2021. These re
sults\, including earthquake locations\, rupture mechanisms and seismi
c tomography\, enable illuminating the geometry and characteristics of
the different lithospheric units involved in the subduction-collision
  transition and their relation to seismicity. &nbsp\;

Isotopic Gradients in Tufa Channels: Insights into Carbonate Dynamics
and Microbial Potential Presentation from Dr. Anna-Neva Visser Friedr
ich-Alexander-Universität (FAU) &nbsp\; Abstract Tufa channels (“St
einerne Rinnen”) are carbonate-precipitating freshwater systems in w
hich hydrological\, geochemical\, and biological processes interact ov
er short spatial scales. Despite their local relevance for carbonate f
ormation and carbon cycling\, the relative importance of physicochemic
al versus biologically mediated processes along active flow paths rema
ins poorly constrained. Here\, geochemical and isotopic gradients were
investigated in three morphologically distinct tufa channels in Bavar
 ia\, Germany. Results combine in-field parameters\, dissolved organic/
inorganic carbon (DOC/DIC) concentrations and hydrochemistry with natu
 ral abundance measurements (δ¹³C-DIC\, δ¹³C-DOC\, δ¹⁸O-DO\,
δ¹⁸O and δD-H₂O). Distinct downstream trends in carbonate syste
 m parameters (alkalinity\, DIC\, pCO₂\, δ¹³C-DIC) indicate strong
CO₂ degassing and carbonate precipitation as dominant controls on c
hannel-scale carbon dynamics\, with channel morphology exerting a clea
r influence on the magnitude and expression of these gradients. In con
trast\, DOC concentrations and δ¹³C-DOC exhibit smaller but notable
spatial variability. Conservative ions remain largely constant along
flow paths\, supporting the dominance of in situ processes over extern
al mixing. These results highlight a channel- and morphology-dependent
development of geochemical and isotopic gradients. The interpretation
of subtle isotopic variations\, particularly in DOC and dissolved oxy
gen\, remains ambiguous and will be discussed in the context of physic
 ochemical versus biological controls. &nbsp\;

DESCRIPTION:&#8211\; GEOWISSENSCHAFTLICHES KOLLOQUIUM &#8211\; Antimon
y isotopes from ore deposits to the global ocean Presentation from Pro
 f. Juraj Majzlan Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena Abstract Antimon
y isotopes represent one of the less studied systems of non-traditiona
l isotopes. Even if only a few studies are available so far\, interest
ing patterns begin to emerge. The average isotopic composition of the
upper continental crust of the Earth is about +0.07 ‰ (with respect
to NIST SRM 3102). The mantle rocks show a narrow range around 0.00
‰ but the oceans and marine sediments are isotopically much heavier.
The difference could be explained with our results that show that dur
ing the weathering of antimony ores\, light isotopes remain in the sec
ondary minerals and the heavy isotopes are carried away. Yet\, the que
stion of fluxes of this element during weathering\, as a result of deg
radation of common rocks versus oxidation of antimony sulfides\, is no
t resolved. Ore deposits show a large range of isotopic compositions\,
either those investigated by us or by Chinese authors. Within this ra
nge\, however\, the isotopic composition correlates well with the posi
tion of the minerals in the precipitation sequence or their concentrat
ion of trace elements. Such regular and monotonous change can be model
ed readily by simple Rayleigh fractionation within a body of fluid. Th
e consequence is that the fluid reservoir must have had substantial co
nnectivity. It can be shown that such systematic evolution of the isot
opic composition can be detected in camps of deposits in larger volume
s of the crust\, suggesting a fluid front moving through the crust and
depositing antimony minerals at different crustal levels. From this p
erspective\, antimony isotopes possess the potential to understanding
of large-scale fluid flow patterns and perhaps also for mineral explor
 ation.

in generally water-rich regions such as Germany\, posing risks to soc
ial-ecological systems. However\, the absence of harmonized and qualit
y-controlled groundwater datasets at a national scale has limited our
understanding of groundwater drought and its impacts. We present a lar
ge-sample groundwater level dataset for Germany including 37\,329 well

to 118 years (median length of 32 years)\, covering the period from Oc

for short gaps (i.e. ≤ 1 month). Based on this harmonized dataset\,
we selected 16\,516 wells with at least 30-year groundwater level tim

onset\, duration\, severity\, and spatial extent. We further link thes

ve Ocean Island Volcanism Explained by High Magmatic Water Content Det
ermined Through Nominally Anhydrous Minerals Presentation from Dr. Har
ri Geiger Universität Freiburg Explosive eruptions are generally cons
idered exceptional on ocean islands\, where basaltic magmas are though
t to contain little water and typically erupt effusively. Yet\, severa
l volcanic islands in the Atlantic and Pa- cific record episodes of ex
plosive volcanism\, hinting at transient changes in magma dynamics tha
t remain poorly understood. We explore new evidence from El Hierro in
the Canary Islands\, where unusually crystal-rich basalts erupted shor
tly after a major sector collapse. Using mineral-scale volatile record
s\, we revisit long-held assumptions about the volatile budgets of oce
an island magmas and the processes that enable their explosive behavio
ur. The results point to deep-seated reservoirs of volatile-rich magma
that may become eruptible when external forces &#8211\; such as rapid
unloading following landslides &#8211\; disturb the magmatic plumbing
system. These findings invite a broader reconsideration of how magmat
ic volatiles\, crustal architecture\, and surface instability interact
to shape the evolution and hazards of ocean islands.

whom? Unravelling the ecology of giant sharks and other extinct preda
tors using the novel zinc isotope proxy &nbsp\; Presentation from Dr.
Jeremy McCormack Goethe-Universität Frankfurt Reconstructing the diet
and trophic ecology of long extinct animals remains one of the greate
st challenges in palaeontology. Diet is a key driver of evolution and
often a predictor of a species’ extinction risk. Rare cases of prese
rved stomach content\, coprolites (fossilised faeces) and bite marks o
ffer snapshots of fossil trophic interactions but are not necessarily
a true reflection of a species regular diet. Stable isotope analyses o
 f collagen nitrogen on the other hand\, is a well-established method t
o identify a vertebrate’s trophic position but is usually not applic
able to fossils older than 100\,000 years due to poor protein preserva
tion. Zinc is incorporated into the mineral phase of bones and teeth a
nd as such has a much better long-term preservation potential\, especi
ally in the hypermineralised outer layer of teeth\, the enamel(oid). O
nly in recent years zinc isotope ratios in bioapatite were discovered
to be a particularly promising diet and trophic level proxy. In this t
alk\, I will demonstrate how we can use this novel proxy to identify a
n extinct animal’s trophic ecology and its position within ancient f
ood webs. I will discuss the ecology of one of the largest predators t
hat ever existed on earth\, the giant shark Otodus megalodon\, and how
the use of zinc isotopes and other geochemical proxies may help us un
derstand how and why a predator could reach these sizes and why this g
 igantic shark went extinct.

DESCRIPTION:Between heat and hope: Species conservation in the age of
climate change A lecture by Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Kießling at the Nuremb
erg Planetarium On October 29\, 2025\, Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Kießling wi
ll give a lecture at the Nuremberg Planetarium titled “Between Heat
and Hope: Species conservation in the Age of Climate Change.” The ev
ent is part of the lecture series “Artenschutz im Anthropozän: Stra
tegien für eine lebenswerte Zukunft” (Species conservation in the a
nthropocene: Strategies for a livable future). The lecture explores ho
w insights from Earth’s history can enrich modern conservation effor
ts. In addition to direct human impacts\, ongoing climate change poses
an increasing threat to animal and plant species worldwide. Many spec
ies are already responding by shifting their habitats toward the poles
. In the oceans\, species are migrating an average of almost six kilom
eters per year to escape rising temperatures. On land\, these movement
s are much more limited—likely because human land use has fragmented
natural habitats\, restricting free movement. Establishing climate-sm
art\, interconnected protected areas is therefore a key strategy for s
afeguarding biodiversity under future climate conditions. In addition\
, creating migration corridors— even within populated or urban areas
  — could help species adapt to changing environmental conditions. Mo

ation The emergence of photosymbiosis in corals From: Jonathan Jung Ma
x-Planck-Institut for Chemistry Coral reefs are among Earth’s most e
nduring and ecologically complex ecosystems\, with an evolutionary leg
acy extending over 450 million years. Long before the rise of modern s
cleractinian corals in the Triassic\, reef frameworks were constructed
by tabulate and rugose corals in partnership with stromatoporoid spon
ges\, forming vast Middle Paleozoic reef tracts that rivalled or excee
ded the scale and biodiversity of modern reefs. However\, the mechanis
ms underlying the evolutionary success and resilience of these early c
oral-stromatoporoid assemblages across major extinction boundaries rem
ain unresolved. The Late Ordovician mass extinction (~445 Ma)\, which
eliminated more than half of marine species\, provides a key natural e
xperiment to examine how reef ecosystems persisted through episodes of
severe climatic oscillation\, oceanic anoxia\, and nutrient reorganiz
ation. We use coral-bound nitrogen isotope (CB-δ¹⁵N) data from col
onial tabulate and solitary rugose corals spanning the Late Ordovician
to Early Silurian transition in Laurentia (Anticosti Island) and Balt
ica (Estonia\, Gotland). Our results reveal isotopic signatures consis
tent with the presence of photosymbiotic nutrient recycling in Paleozo
ic corals\, predating the end-Ordovician mass extinction and emerging
during the terminal phase of the Great Ordovician Biodiversification E
vent (GOBE). Elevated CB-δ¹⁵N values across the extinction horizon
indicate expansion of marine anoxia\, likely driven by enhanced phosp
horus recycling and redox instability in the late Ordovician ocean. To
gether\, these findings provide the first geochemical evidence for ear
ly coral photosymbiosis as an adaptive strategy established well befor
e modern coral evolution. We propose that photosymbiosis acted as both
a key innovation and an evolutionary constraint in early reef

adopted tools across both industry and academia. In geoscience\, howev
er\, their application presents unique challenges. Geochemical data—
crucial in mineral exploration—are increasingly voluminous\, straini
ng traditional interpretation techniques such as scatterplots\, discri
mination diagrams\, and multi-element plots. These conventional method
s often neglect the compositional nature of geochemical data\, leading
to misleading or incorrect conclusions. In recent years\, the field h
as seen a growing shift toward statistical and ML-based approaches\, e

quantitative insights\, it has also introduced risks of misapplication

ties and methodological limitations. This talk explores the value of m

SUMMARY:Geokolloqium\, Prof. David C. Mays

DESCRIPTION:&#8211\; GEOWISSENSCHAFTLICHES KOLLOQUIUM &#8211\; Chaotic
Advection in Porous Media: Dimensionality\, Scaling\, and Engineering
Prof. David C. Mays University of Colorado Denver The growing body of
literature exploring chaotic advection in porous media has provided n
ew insights into solute transport\, mixing\, and reaction in two-dimen
sional (2D) and 3D geometries and spanning the micrometer scale of por
es to the 10-meter scale of groundwater remediation field sites. Chaot
ic advection refers to chaos in laminar flows manifesting unpredictabi
lity from sensitive dependence on initial conditions\, popularly known
as the butterfly effect. This unpredictability results\, not from ine
rtial terms in the Navier-Stokes equations nor from random heterogenei
ty in the porous media\, but from the nonlinear structure of the dynam
ic system itself\, in which solute plumes are stretched and folded\, p
opularly known as the baker&#8217\;s transformation. The analysis of s
uch flows depends on Lagrangian tools including Lyapunov exponents to
quantify the butterfly effect and Poincaré sections to visualize the
flow morphology. The literature features three principal applications
to date\, namely (1) ubiquitous chaotic advection at the pore scale\,
 (2) naturally occurring chaotic advection at the Darcy scale\, and (3)
engineered chaotic advection\, a subset of engineered injection and e
xtraction (EIE). Among these applications\, EIE has attracted the most
attention so far\, including theoretical developments\, laboratory ex
periments\, and one field test\, with contributions from groups in Aus
 tralia\, Canada\, Germany\, India\, Spain\, and the United States. Cha
otic advection in porous media holds promise for understanding natural
processes\, such as carbon and nutrient cycling\, and engineered proc
esses\, such as groundwater remediation and in situ leach mining. If o
ne accepts the premise that the rich complexity of biogeochemistry in
